Christopher Anne “Chris” Affleck, the schoolteacher and activist who raised two of Hollywood’s most celebrated brothers, has died at the age of 83. The family confirmed her passing on Thursday, July 23, 2026. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Chris Affleck was best known in the public eye as the mother of Ben Affleck, the Oscar-winning actor and director, and Casey Affleck, the Academy Award-winning actor. Yet those who knew her best described a woman of fierce intellect, stubborn independence, and deep community commitment. Her death marks the end of a quiet but powerful presence behind two of the most prominent careers in modern cinema.

Born Christopher Anne Boldt, she grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and later attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She met her husband, Timothy Byers Affleck, a social worker and playwright, in the 1960s. The couple married and settled in Berkeley, California, before moving back to the Boston area, where they raised Ben, Casey, and their daughter, Jennifer. Tim Affleck died in 2021.

Chris worked for many years as a middle-school teacher in the Cambridge public school system. Former students remembered her not only for her demanding classroom style but for her deep empathy and unwillingness to let any child slip through the cracks. Those same qualities, colleagues said, shaped the household that produced two of Hollywood’s most introspective actors.

She became a familiar figure at red-carpet events during the height of her sons’ fame, often standing quietly in the background. But her role in their lives was anything but passive. In interviews over the years, both Ben and Casey credited their mother with teaching them the importance of hard work, compassion, and staying grounded in an industry that thrives on ego.

“She was the first person who ever made me believe I could be anything,” Ben Affleck said in a 2015 interview. “She would read my terrible early stories and homework and treat them like they mattered. She made us feel like our thoughts had weight.”

That intellectual encouragement extended beyond the classroom. Chris was a lifelong activist, involved in anti-poverty initiatives and educational reform. She marched for civil rights and women’s equality, and she instilled in her children a sense of responsibility toward others that both brothers have cited as foundational to their public work.

Casey Affleck, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2017 for Manchester by the Sea, often spoke of his mother’s influence on his choice of roles. “She gave me permission to think deeply about the people I play, to see them as more than just bad guys or good guys,” he said in a 2018 interview. “She showed me that every person has a story worth telling.”

A quiet presence behind a Hollywood family

For all her sons’ success, Chris Affleck largely avoided the limelight. Friends noted that she seemed genuinely uninterested in celebrity culture. She continued to live in Cambridge for most of her adult life, teaching until her retirement in the early 2000s. Her small, unassuming home became a sanctuary for the family, a place where Ben and Casey could escape the demands of film sets and premieres.

In 2014, Ben Affleck dedicated his film Gone Girl, in which he starred alongside Rosamund Pike, to his mother. The dedication read simply, “For Chris.” He later explained that she had been one of the first people to read the Gillian Flynn novel that inspired the film and had urged him to take the project.

A legacy of education and activism

Beyond her immediate family, Chris Affleck leaves behind a network of former students and colleagues who remember her as a transformative educator. Several alumni of Cambridge public schools posted tributes online, recalling a teacher who refused to give up on even the most difficult students. One former student wrote that she “saw potential in kids who others had written off.”

Her family asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cambridge Public Schools Foundation, where a memorial fund has been established in her name.

She is survived by her sons, Ben and Casey Affleck; her daughter, Jennifer; and four grandchildren. A private funeral will be held in the coming days. The family has requested privacy during this time of mourning.
