Diego Luna to Receive Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award

The Sarajevo Film Festival has announced that Mexican actor Diego Luna will receive this year’s Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award, recognizing his contributions to cinema and his longstanding ties to the festival. Luna, best known to global audiences for his role as Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will be honoured during the 32nd edition of the festival, which runs August 14 - 21.

The Honorary Heart of Sarajevo is the festival’s highest tribute, previously awarded to figures such as Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie, and Gael García Bernal. Luna’s selection underscores both his international stature and his history with the event: he has been a guest of the festival multiple times, including in 2015 when he presented his directorial debut Cesar Chavez.

A Career Built on Border-Crossing Roles

Luna first gained widespread attention in Alfonso Cuarón’s Y Tu Mamá También (2001), a road-trip drama that became a touchstone for Mexican cinema. Since then, he has built a career that balances Hollywood blockbusters with intimate, independent projects. His portrayal of Cassian Andor - a Rebel intelligence officer - in Rogue One (2016) and the subsequent Disney+ series Andor (2022 - 2025) has made him a fixture of the Star Wars universe, but he has also remained deeply rooted in Latin American storytelling.

“Diego represents a generation of actors who have carried the richness of Mexican and Latin American culture onto the world stage,” said festival director Mirsad Purivatra in a statement. “His commitment to social issues, especially through his work with the Ambulante documentary festival, shows that cinema can be both art and activism.”

Luna co-founded Ambulante with Gael García Bernal in 2005, a traveling documentary festival that brings non-fiction films to underserved communities across Mexico. The initiative has expanded to other countries and is widely regarded as one of the most effective independent distribution models in Latin America.

The Sarajevo Connection

The actor’s relationship with the festival dates back to 2007, when he first visited during the postwar rebuild of the city. He has since participated in masterclasses and supported Bosnian filmmakers through co-production initiatives. Festival organizers noted that Luna’s presence at Sarajevo has often drawn attention to the region’s emerging talents.

“Sarajevo has always been a place where I feel the urgency of storytelling,” Luna said in a prepared statement issued by the festival. “The people here know what it means to fight for a voice, and that resonates deeply with me.”

A Year of Honors for Luna

The Sarajevo award caps a notable year for the actor. In early 2026, he received the Spotlight Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and his production company, La Corriente del Golfo, announced a multi-project partnership with Netflix focusing on Latin American narratives. He also recently wrapped production on Rancho de la Luna, an indie drama set in Baja California, which is expected to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall.

Luna’s Honorary Heart of Sarajevo will be presented during the festival’s opening ceremony on August 14. The event will also screen a selection of his films, including Rogue One and Y Tu Mamá También, as part of a tribute retrospective.

Festival Lineup and Context

The 2026 Sarajevo Film Festival features a robust program of 80 films from more than 40 countries, with a strong emphasis on films from Southeast Europe. This year’s competition includes narratives from Kosovo, Romania, and Greece, alongside an African film strand focusing on diasporic stories. The festival continues to serve as a key platform for regional cinema, particularly for directors working in post-conflict settings.

Luna’s award arrives at a time when the festival is also honoring women in cinema - a parallel program, “Her Voice,” runs concurrently with the main competition, showcasing films directed by or centering women. Organizers said Luna’s advocacy for inclusive storytelling aligns with that initiative.

No additional details regarding the award ceremony’s format or Luna’s itinerary in Sarajevo have been released. The actor is expected to travel to Bosnia in early August for the event.

The Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award does not carry a cash prize, but it includes a bronze sculpture by Bosnian artist Mersad Berber. Previous recipients include Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski, who received the award posthumously in 1996, and American director Mike Leigh in 2007.

Luna’s selection reinforces the festival’s tradition of honoring artists who use cinema as a tool for cultural bridge-building. For the 47-year-old actor, the recognition marks another milestone in a career that has consistently crossed borders - both geographic and cinematic.
