The first full trailer for Jumanji: Open World has arrived, and it flips the franchise’s core conceit on its head. Instead of the heroes being sucked into a video game, the game has now spilled into reality. The two-minute glimpse, which dropped online early this morning, shows Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan reprising their avatar roles - but now they’re battling rampant jungle creatures and collapsing buildings in a city that looks suspiciously like New York.

The teaser opens with a familiar scene: a vintage video-game console crackling to life on a suburban coffee table. Then the screen goes black, and the sound of roaring animals fills a quiet living room. “We’ve been here before,” Johnson’s Dr. Smolder Bravestone says, striding out of a portal onto a rain-slicked street, “but never like this.” The trailer quickly cuts to Hart’s Franklin “Mouse” Finbar firing a pistol at a stampeding rhino that has just burst through the side of a skyscraper. Jack Black’s Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon is seen trying to use a flaming torch on a fire hydrant, while Karen Gillan’s Ruby Roundhouse executes a high-kick that sends a giant snake crashing into a news van.

Director Jake Kasdan, who helmed the previous two Jumanji films, returns for this third installment. The premise, according to the official synopsis, is that a malfunction has caused the game’s code to escape its console, mapping the unpredictable landscapes of Jumanji onto the real world. That means the players - Spencer (Alex Wolff), Martha (Morgan Turner), and Bethany (Madison Iseman) - must once again inhabit their animal-coded avatars, but this time they cannot simply beat the game and go home. The rules have changed, and so has the scale.

The trailer does not reveal a full runtime, but the scope suggests a blockbuster budget. Visual effects shots show entire neighborhoods transformed into dense jungle, with crumbling asphalt giving way to quicksand pits and office workers fleeing from giant dragonflies. In the first two films, the comedy came from teenagers trapped in adult avatars and struggling to survive a game they barely understood. Now the joke is on the real world: a librarian gets eaten by a giant pitcher plant; a traffic jam is caused by a herd of stampeding zebras; and Jack Black, still in his avatar form, delivers a deadpan monologue about insurance deductibles while standing hip-deep in a swamp that has swallowed a bus.

The trailer’s closing shot is a tease. Johnson’s Bravestone stands on a skyscraper rooftop as the camera pulls back to reveal the entire skyline has been replaced by a towering jungle canopy. “Jumanji has no off switch,” he says, and the title card slams in.

Fans have noted that the December 25, 2026 release date places the film squarely in the holiday box-office corridor, a slot the Jumanji franchise has owned before - the 2017 film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle earned nearly $1 billion worldwide after its own Christmas release.

In a brief statement accompanying the trailer’s release, Kasdan said the team wanted to “give audiences something they haven’t seen in this series - a world that fights back even when there’s no console to turn off.” He described the film as a “mash-up of survival adventure and city-wide disaster comedy,” a tone that the trailer mostly confirms. The sight of Kevin Hart running from a velociraptor in a business suit and Jack Black trying to haggle with a fruit vendor who has turned into a giant snake suggests that the humor remains intact even as the stakes have multiplied.

For now, the full plot remains under wraps. The trailer hints at a race to find a way to “close the breach” before Jumanji overwrites the entire planet, but it also leaves plenty of questions unanswered: What role does Awkwafina’s Ming play? How do Spencer, Martha, and Bethany navigate a world that treats their avatars as dangerous anomalies? And will the returning cast members from the real-world scenes - Wolff, Turner, Iseman - have more screen time than in previous sequels?

With a holiday release and a trailer that promises both spectacle and laughs, Jumanji: Open World looks poised to continue the franchise’s unlikely reign as one of Hollywood’s most reliable comedic action series. The game may have escaped its console, but if the trailer is any indication, Johnson and company will make sure the last laugh is theirs.
