The project, simply titled Lou Gehrig, marks a reunion between Powell and Linklater following their collaboration on the 2023 comedy Hit Man, which earned strong reviews. The film will chronicle the life of the New York Yankees first baseman whose consecutive games streak and tragic battle with ALS made him one of sport’s most iconic figures.

No director has been officially announced beyond Linklater’s involvement, though the filmmaker’s track record suggests he will helm the picture. A Second Team-Up for Powell and Linklater

Powell and Linklater’s previous collaboration established a working rapport that now extends into more dramatic territory. In Hit Man, Powell played a fake contract killer working as a police decoy, blending comedy with thriller elements. That film premiered at the Venice Film Festival before landing a wide release on Netflix.

For Powell, the role of Gehrig represents a significant dramatic challenge. The baseball star was known for his quiet dignity, powerful hitting, and unwavering reliability-playing in 2,130 consecutive games before ALS forced him from the lineup. Known as the “Iron Horse,” Gehrig died in 1941 at age 37, two years after delivering his famous “luckiest man on the face of the earth” speech at Yankee Stadium.

Lorne Michaels Extends Production Reach

The new film faces the challenge of distinguishing itself from that classic.
