The premise is straight out of a fever dream: The Minions, after years of serving despicable villains, decide to “conquer Hollywood” by becoming movie stars. They produce a massive-budget blockbuster (naturally, they write, direct, and star in it), but their egomania and lack of any actual talent turn the production into a monster movie-literally. Their film’s special effects go haywire, unleashing a horde of mutated, googly-eyed creatures onto Los Angeles. Now the Minions must team up with a washed-up stuntman (voiced by Jeff Bridges, channeling The Dude) and a no-nonsense EPA agent (Allison Janney) to clean up the mayhem they created.
The narrative splits into three distinct acts: the rise (a satire of Hollywood, complete with a cameo of a very stressed-out agent), the fall (monsters rampaging through the Dolby Theatre), and the redemption (a bizarre third-act swamp chase involving a giant, sentient popcorn kernel). It’s loose, often nonsensical, but it moves at a breakneck speed.
