Project Hail Mary Review: A Sci-Fi Triumph

Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) awakens in a sterile chamber aboard a starship. He has amnesia, two dead crewmates, and no idea his name is Ryland Grace. As fragments of memory return, we learn he is a junior high science teacher who was secretly drafted into a desperate mission. The sun is dimming - being sapped of energy by an alien substance called the “Astrophage.” Earth faces extinction within decades. Grace, along with a handpicked international team, was sent to the Tau Ceti system to find a solution. Only he survived the journey. As his memory fully resurfaced, he realizes he must diagnose the Astrophage problem, repair his ship, and - spoiler for the novel readers, but a reveal in the first act of the film - encounter a truly alien intelligence: Rocky, a spider-like being from a different planet whose ship has also been crippled by the same cosmic plague.

Phil Lord, directing solo for the first time without his partner Christopher Miller, pulls off a delicate balancing act. He treats the science with reverence - montages of Grace performing experiments with a Bunsen burner, microscopes, and a whole lot of duct tape are genuinely gripping - without ever losing sight of the story’s beating heart. The movie is essentially a two-hander for long stretches: Gosling’s Grace and Rocky, voiced with exquisite warmth by James Ortiz.

Gosling is a revelation here. He sheds his usual cool detachment to play a man who is brilliant, terrified, and often accidentally hilarious. His Grace is a guy who talks to himself, bangs his head against a bulkhead in frustration, and solves cosmic equations with the giddy joy of a kid winning a science fair. The amnesia structure allows for a slow-burn emotional reveal: we see who he was - a man who ran from responsibility - and watch him grow into the hero he never wanted to be.

But the real star is Rocky. Designed as a clunky, multi-limbed creature who communicates through musical tones and body language, Rocky could have been a gimmick. Instead, Lord and Ortiz make him the soul of the film. The scene where Grace and Rocky first learn to communicate by tapping on windows - mapping numbers and colors to sounds - is one of the most purely cinematic, joyful sequences in recent memory. It’s Arrival’s linguistics meets Cast Away’s desperation, but with a dash of sitcom buddy comedy. By the film’s end, you love Rocky as much as Grace does.

Supporting players are well-used. Sandra Hüller brings a chilling pragmatism as Eva Stratt, the project director who will sacrifice anything for success. Lionel Boyce and Milana Vayntrub have brief but impactful roles as Grace’s ill-fated crewmates. Ken Leung does heavy lifting in flashbacks as the stoic commander Yao.

If there’s a critique, it’s the runtime. At 157 minutes, the middle act sags slightly during a repetitive repair sequence. And purists may bristle at the ending, which Lord tweaks for a more crowd-pleasing, hug-it-out conclusion than Weir’s novel. But honestly? After two and a half hours of genuine scientific problem-solving and inter-species friendship, I walked out feeling like I’d just saved the world myself.

I can’t remember the last time a film made me want to learn about stellar astrophysics and also call my best friend. That’s the kind of magic that earns an 8.6 on TMDb and a spot on your must-watch list. Go see it. Bring tissues. And maybe a calculator.
