If you know McDonagh’s work, you know that the line between comedy and tragedy is razor-thin-and that he loves to slice it right down the middle. Wild Horse Nine seems to follow that formula, with a twist of exotic isolation. The trailer gives off a Seven Psychopaths energy, but with more volcanic rock and Polynesian mystique. We’re looking at a buddy-CIA story that’s less Jason Bourne, more The Guard meets The Wicker Man. Rockwell and Malkovich are expected to bring their A-game: Rockwell’s fast-talking irreverence paired with Malkovich’s slow-burn menace.
The setting isn’t just window dressing. Easter Island’s moai statues loom large in the trailer, symbolizing secrets, history, and maybe a few inconvenient bodies. The 1973 Chilean coup provides a ticking clock, but the focus seems to be on the personal chaos these agents create when they’re left to their own devices. Expect political paranoia, verbal sparring, and the kind of moral ambiguity that leaves you unsure who to root for. McDonagh loves to give his characters sharp dialogue that cuts both ways, and the trailer hints at plenty of that.
