LOS ANGELES - When audiences walk into “Cookie Queens” this August, they might expect a lighthearted look at the nation’s beloved Girl Scout cookie season. But director Alysa Nahmias and executive producer Meghan Markle want viewers to know the documentary is a layered exploration of what it means to grow up female in America. In a joint interview with Hollywood Buzz News, the two creators unpacked why a 91-minute film about selling Thin Mints and Samoas became a vehicle for examining identity, ambition, and the quiet pressures placed on young girls.

The project, which hits theaters on August 7, 2026, follows four real-life participants: Ara, Shannon Elizabeth, Nikki, and Olive, all of whom are either current scouts or former sellers revisiting their experiences. Nahmias explained that the initial idea blossomed from a personal place. “I grew up selling cookies myself, and I realized that so much of my childhood confidence and my early understanding of money, rejection, and belonging happened during those six weeks of the year,” she said. “The cookie booth is this tiny stage where girls learn to negotiate, to face disappointment, and to shine. I wanted to capture that full emotional arc.”

Markle, who joined the project as an executive producer after reading an early treatment, said the film resonates with her own background as a young girl navigating public expectations long before she became a member of the British royal family. “There’s a misconception that the Girl Scout cookie sale is just about fundraising. It’s actually a crash course in entrepreneurship, self-advocacy, and resilience,” Markle noted. “But it’s also a pressure cooker. These girls are graded on their sales, compared to their peers, and sometimes pushed by parents who see it as a résumé builder. ‘Cookie Queens’ doesn’t shy away from that tension.”

A Story of Girlhood, Not Just Sales

The documentary’s overview describes it as “a celebration of girlhood and the complexities that come with it,” and both Nahmias and Markle emphasized that the film takes an unflinching look at how the cookie ritual mirrors larger societal dynamics. Rather than a straightforward feel-good piece, “Cookie Queens” includes segments where the young subjects discuss the stress of meeting quotas, the sting of being told “no” at a doorstep, and the awkwardness of balancing friendship with competition.

Nahmias said she deliberately avoided adult narration or celebrity voice-overs, instead letting the scouts speak directly to the camera. “Ara, Shannon, Nikki, and Olive are the authorities of their own stories,” the director said. “They’re funny, they’re vulnerable, and they’re brutally honest. One of the girls talks about how she felt her value was tied to how many boxes she sold, and that broke my heart and also made me furious. That’s the kind of conversation I hope the film starts.”

Shannon Elizabeth, one of the subjects, is a former scout who now works in marketing. Her story involves returning to her hometown to help her younger sister through a particularly difficult cookie season. The film also features Nikki, a scout who uses the sales process to fund her passion for robotics, and Olive, a shy 10-year-old who discovers her voice behind the table.

Markle's Personal Connection to the Cookie Sale

Markle, who has been a vocal advocate for girls’ education and economic empowerment through her Archewell Foundation, revealed that she sold cookies as a child in Los Angeles. “I remember the thrill of the first sale and the embarrassment of the first rejection,” she said. “Those experiences taught me to communicate clearly and to handle failure without taking it personally. But I also recall the pressure to sell more than my friends. When Alysa showed me the footage of these girls, I saw my own childhood in their faces, and I knew I had to help bring this story to a wider audience.”

The Duchess of Sussex stressed that “Cookie Queens” isn’t a nostalgia piece for adults who remember their own uniform days. Instead, it’s meant to spark conversations between parents and daughters about ambition, self-worth, and the often-unspoken emotional labor that comes with being a girl in public spaces. “We’re not saying the cookie sale is bad. Far from it,” Markle clarified. “We’re saying let’s look at it honestly so that the next generation can sell their cookies without the weight of expectations they didn’t ask for.”

A Documentary With No Official Rating Yet

As of July 29, 2026, “Cookie Queens” has not received a TMDb rating - the platform currently lists it as 0/10 simply because no audience scores are in yet. But early buzz from festival screenings suggests the documentary has resonated with critics who praise its intimate access and refusal to sugarcoat its subject. Nahmias said she hopes the film will be shown in schools and community centers, not just theaters.

“We’re releasing on August 7, right before the back-to-school season, and that’s intentional,” she added. “Parents are making decisions about what activities their kids will do this fall. I want ‘Cookie Queens’ to be part of that conversation about what we’re really teaching our daughters when we hand them a clipboard and a price sheet.”
