Zoe Saldaña to Receive Locarno Fest Special Honor

Zoe Saldaña is set to receive a special honor at the 79th Locarno Film Festival, the Swiss event announced Thursday. The actress, best known globally for her starring role in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, will be recognized for her contributions to cinema during the festival’s upcoming edition, which runs from August 5 to 15 in the lakeside town of Locarno.

Saldaña will be presented with the Pardo d’Onore Manor, Locarno’s lifetime achievement award, at a ceremony on August 10. The honor places her alongside previous recipients including John Malkovich, Hilary Swank, and this year’s earlier announced honoree, actor Eddie Redmayne. The festival’s artistic director, Giona A. Nazzaro, said in a statement that Saldaña’s “ability to inhabit characters that are both deeply human and utterly extraordinary” made her a natural fit for the award.

“Zoe Saldaña has navigated the intersection of intimate storytelling and global blockbuster spectacle with rare skill,” Nazzaro said. “From her beginnings in independent films to commanding the largest film franchises in history, she has never lost the emotional core that makes her performances resonate.”

The announcement comes as Saldaña continues to dominate the global box office. Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, in which she reprised her role as Neytiri, earned over $2.3 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time. A third Avatar installment is currently in post-production, with Saldaña expected to return. She also remains a fixture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and Avengers: Endgame.

Yet Locarno’s tribute, festival organizers stressed, is not merely a nod to franchise mechanics. Saldaña’s earlier work, including her breakthrough supporting role in Center Stage (2000) and her lead performance in The Words (2012), has earned critical respect. She was an executive producer and supporting actress in the 2023 Netflix drama From Scratch, based on Tembi Locke’s memoir, and has several independent projects in development.

The festival will screen a selection of Saldaña’s films during its run, though the specific lineup has not yet been announced. A masterclass with the actress is also scheduled for the morning of August 10, where she will discuss her career evolution and the challenges of balancing commercial and personal projects.

A Career Built on Range and Resilience

Saldaña’s path to Locarno’s spotlight was not a straight line. Born in New Jersey and raised in the Dominican Republic and Queens, she studied dance and acting before landing small television roles in the late 1990s. Her first major film role came in 2000’s Center Stage, a ballet drama that showcased her physicality and persistence. She followed with a string of supporting parts in films like Crossroads (2002) and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), but it was her turn as Nyota Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot that signaled her crossover appeal.

That same year, Cameron cast her in Avatar, a decision that would define the next decade of her career. Saldaña underwent extensive motion-capture performance, a process she has since championed as legitimate acting rather than mere technical gimmickry. “We are actors, not voices in a booth,” she said in a 2022 interview, reflecting on the physical demands of embodying a fully digital character.

The Locarno honor arrives at a moment when the actress is also stepping into producing and directing. She recently developed a project about Dominican-American identity and has voiced a desire to tell stories from her own cultural background. “I want to create opportunities for actors and filmmakers who look like my family,” she said earlier this year, though she has not yet confirmed whether she will direct a feature.

Locarno’s Enduring Tradition

The Locarno Film Festival, founded in 1946, is known for its open-air screenings on the Piazza Grande and its focus on arthouse and auteur cinema. The Pardo d’Onore Manor is one of several lifetime achievement awards the festival bestows annually, alongside the Leopard Club Award for actors and the Vision Award for directors. Past recipients include Isabella Rossellini, Sir Ian McKellen, and Charlotte Rampling.

Festival director Nazzaro emphasized that Saldaña’s selection reflects the organization’s evolving definition of cinema. “The boundaries between popular entertainment and serious art are porous,” he said. “Zoe Saldaña has proven that you can move millions of people while still challenging yourself as an artist. That is exactly the spirit we want to honor.”

No specific date has been announced for the masterclass, but festival passes and individual tickets for the August 10 ceremony go on sale July 31 via the official Locarno website.

Saldaña is expected to attend the festival in person, marking her first visit to the Swiss event. In a brief statement released through the festival’s press office, she said she feels “deeply honored and a little overwhelmed” by the recognition. “Locarno is a place where cinema is celebrated with passion and integrity,” she said. “To be part of that legacy is a dream I never dared to have.”

The award ceremony will take place at the Piazza Grande on the evening of August 10, followed by a screening of one of Saldaña’s films. The 2022 Avatar sequel is widely speculated to be the feature, though no confirmation has been given.
